Xbox: record sales for the brand in 2021

Xbox, Call of Duty, Capcom... the business news of the week

Microsoft unveiled its balance sheet for the last quarter of 2021. The video game branch of the American giant can boast of having signed the biggest quarter in its history, but also its best year. Between October and December 2021, it achieved a turnover of 4.8 billion euros (up 8% compared to the last quarter of 2020), for a total turnover of 14.4 billion euros. euros for the whole of 2021. Two new records in Xbox history. Unfortunately, the benefits of the brand are not revealed in this report as always sparing in detail, at least as far as video games are concerned.

We are just told that hardware sales increased by 4% in the last quarter. According to recent estimates, Xbox Series X|S surpassed 12 million sales worldwide, outperforming previous Xbox consoles after 14 months on the market. The turnover of the “Content & Services” segment (sales of games, DLC and subscriptions) also increased, by 10%, attributed to the good performance of games developed in-house and the increase in subscriptions, which offset a decline in sales of third-party games. Recall that Microsoft released Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5 (18 million players) and
Halo Infinite (20 million players) during the quarter and that there are 25 million Game Pass subscribers, compared to 18 million in January 2020.

The balance sheet ball continues with Capcom, which presented its results for the period from April to December 2021, the first nine months of its fiscal year, and they are more than satisfactory. Turnover reached 658 million euros (up 35.9%), operating profit 272 million euros (up 43.9%) and net profit 207 million euros (up of 52.4%). The publisher has already surpassed its record annual net profit (188 million euros) while there is still one quarter (January-March 2022) to be taken into account in this fiscal year, that of the launch of Monster Hunter Rise on PC.

Capcom sold no less than 25.8 million games between April and December 2021, including 8 million Monster Hunter Rise, 5.7 million Resident Evil Village and 1.4 million Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. The publisher was also able to count on its “back catalog” (previously published games), in particular Resident Evil 7 which has sold over a million copies for the sixth consecutive year, for a total exceeding 10 million. Of these 25.8 million games sold, 18.7 million (72%) were downloaded. This dematerialization of sales has the effect of improving the publisher’s margin.

Call of Duty: the next three games would be released well on PlayStation

Xbox, Call of Duty, Capcom... the business news of the week

This is one of the main issues of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft: once the operation is finalized, which should take place between July 2022 and March 2023, will PlayStation be deprived of the popular franchise Call of Duty? For the time being, it is impossible to answer this question. Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer last week signaled his intention to honor “existing agreements” between Sony and Activision.

Journalist Jason Schreier of Bloomberg went to inquire about the nature of these agreements. According to four sources familiar with the matter, Activision has already committed to releasing the next three Call of Duty games on PlayStation. It is more specifically about Call of Duty 2022 (which would be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019 by Infinity Ward), Call of Duty 2023 (developed by Treyarch) and a successor to Call of Duty Warzone which would land in 2023. D ‘after Tom Henderson, this “Warzone 2” would be a real new game planned for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. It would therefore take advantage of the power offered by the latest consoles.

FIFA, GTA 5 and the Switch dominated Europe in 2021

Xbox, Call of Duty, Capcom... the business news of the week

The GSD research institute has published its review of the year 2021 in Europe, during which more than 170 million video games were sold. This represents a drop of 9.5% compared to the exceptional year 2020, marked by the confinements and the release of the Animal Crossing New Horizons phenomenon. What doesn’t change is FIFA’s dominance. Without surprise, FIFA 22 was the biggest hit of 2021 on the Old Continent, making sales almost twice as high as the game that occupies the 2nd place in the ranking, the eternal GTA 5. FIFA 21 completes the podium, followed in 4th position by Call of Duty : Vanguard, whose sales are 34% lower than its predecessor (Call of Duty : Black Ops Cold War). Find below the top 20, in which we notice the low presence of new products among the best sellers. GSD notes that games released in 2021 accounted for just 29% of overall sales.

Some novelties have nevertheless been able to hold their own, namely Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (7e), Far Cry 6 (13e), Resident Evil Village (17e), Battlefield 2042 (18e), Mario Party Superstars (19th) and Pokémon Sparkling Diamond / Sparkling Pearl, which would break into the top 10 if the sales of the two versions were not counted separately. We also point out that Nintendo does not report download sales of its games. They are therefore not counted here..

Let’s end with a word about consoles. 7.1 million machines were sold in Europe, but GSD’s data does not include sales in the UK and Germany, two major markets. The Switch was the best-selling console, with numbers down just 6% from 2020, ahead of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S which would have seen far more sales if not for the stock issues they are experiencing . As a reminder, we learned last week that the Nintendo console totals 6.1 million copies sold in France, including 1.3 million in 2021, compared to around 765,000 PS5s and 300,000 Xbox Series X|S.
