The announcement on Tuesday of acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King by Microsoft for the trifle of 68.7 billion dollars has had the effect of a detonation in the video game industry. While many questions remain unanswered – first of all the validation of the takeover by the competition authorities – the main adversary of Microsoft in the console market, Sony finally reacted on Thursday.

Asked by the Wall Street Journal, the Japanese manufacturer of the PlayStation 5 has split a simple communication already allowing to see the angle of attack envisaged by Sony for the months to come: “We hope that Microsoft will follow through on its contractual commitments and continue to offer Activision games on multiple platforms”.

This is the first time Sony has responded, via a spokesperson, to theMicrosoft announcement made this Tuesday. It therefore seems that, for the Japanese manufacturer, the main fear is not so much the accumulation of studios by Microsoft itself – the American firm had already bought Bethesda last year – but above all the preservation of the catalog of Activision games. on PlayStation consoles. A fear shared by many PS5 owners since the beginning of the week, so much so that Microsoft’s strategy on the future of Activision licenses is still undetermined. First we think games Call of Duty, a real machine for selling consoles at Microsoft and Sony, and whose absence on PlayStation in the future could be a blow for the Japanese console manufacturer.

Microsoft reassures for Activision games on PS5

In its press release published when the takeover was announced, Microsoft had however wanted to reassure both the players, but also Sony and the competition authorities. “Activision Blizzard games are available on different platforms and we look forward to continuing to support these communities in the future”. the boss of xbox, Phil Spencer, was even more direct about the fears of the players in an interview with the Bloomberg agency:

I would just like to say to players who play Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform that we have no plans to remove communities from this platform and we remain committed to them.

So it seems Microsoft’s goal isn’t so much to cut PS5 players off Activision-Blizzard-King games as it is to offer those games within the Xbox Game Pass catalog. An argument already put forward initially in the press release: “We will then offer as many Activision Blizzard titles as possible in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, whether new games or classics from Activision Blizzard’s incredible catalog.”.

However, let us recall the precedent of the acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft. If the firm did not remove the publisher’s licenses from the PS5 catalog after its takeover – Microsoft even published Deathloop console exclusive for the PlayStation 5 – the firm has already announced that certain future licenses will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. This will be particularly the case for Starfield, the next sci-fi role-playing game from Bethesda, but also from The Elder Scrolls VI, the sequel to Skyrim.

From Minecraft to Call of Duty, via Halo or even Wolfenstein and Candy Crush, Microsoft now has an impressive range of video games in hand with the addition of Activision Blizzard King. Everything for…
