Samsung proves it still has several foldable smartphone ideas

Samsung took advantage of CES in Las Vegas to present the types of folding screens that its Samsung Display division is working on. Concepts that could be found in the future.

On the occasion of THOSE from Las Vegas, Samsung presented several smartphone concepts with flexible screens. Formats very different from those already offered by the Korean manufacturer on its two models currently offered, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

In addition to his Samsung foldable PC Flex Note, the firm has indeed posted a press release this Friday to present the different flexible screen technologies on which its Samsung Display division is working. Enough to discover – or rediscover – formats for phones or tablets that go further than the simple folds offered by the Fold and Flip.

The most original concept is clearly the Flex Slidable format. It is indeed a roll-up and stretchable screen, in the same vein as what Oppo was able to unveil last spring with its Oppo X 2021. We therefore have a smartphone with a rather classic, elongated format, whose screen can unfold on the right side to lie down in order to offer an experience a little closer to that of a tablet.

This is not the first time that Samsung has unveiled this concept of stretchy screen, the Korean manufacturer having it already presented last november. Nevertheless, the CES was an opportunity for the firm to allow users to take charge of this prototype.

Many “concepts” rarely see the light of day. But Samsung is one of the few companies making folding phones you can actually buy.

Also shown for the first time last November before taking over at CES, Samsung unveiled its Flex S folding screen concept. Here, the S refers to the shape of the partially unfolded smartphone, since we are dealing here to a smartphone with vertical folds, as on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but two in number and not a single fold.

What to enjoy, once the smartphone is fully unfolded, a screen three times larger than when it is folded. “The main advantage of this format is that depending on how you fold it, it can be used as a smartphone, tablet or artificial intelligence device.”, indicate Samsung.

If the Flex S screen offers an interior fold and an exterior fold, the latest display concept from Samsung, the Flex G goes further since it offers two interior folds this time. Again, the letter G here refers to the shape of the folds when the smartphone folds up. The advantage of this format is to have a protected screen when it is completely folded up since it is only inside the smartphone: “The device benefits from greater durability since its two-fold design protects it from drops or external impacts better than conventional folding”.

Screens that could be found at Samsung … but not only

If these three screen concepts were presented at CES in Las Vegas, they are not necessarily products that will be launched by Samsung in the coming months … at least not necessarily. Samsung Display does not only supply its parent company with Oled panels, but a large part of the smartphone industry.

Here, it is therefore for the supplier to democratize its technologies in order to attract not only the general public, but also and above all, its potential customers. We could therefore find these Flex Slidable, Flex S or Flex G screens on Oppo, Xiaomi, Realme or Google smartphones in the future.
