Rainbow Six Extraction Preview: The intelligence of Siege and the brutality of Back 4 Blood, an explosive cocktail?

While the Rainbow Six saga has never been so popular thanks to its Siege opus, Ubisoft does not hesitate to reflect on different concepts and attempt more unexpected things: this Extraction episode is a good demonstration of that, he who is will ogle the side of science fiction and the supernatural … while retaining certain key characteristics of its DNA. Future good surprise?

Zombies have always been popular and video games have certainly not put barriers to exploit them very profitably. : in a very specific genre, that of multiplayer and cooperation, we are obliged to cite the Call of Duty where the Left 4 Dead who have widely popularized the living dead, to the point of almost stopping the trend. Almost, yes, because those who are now more generally called the “infected” are still very present… and you just have to see the recent one Back 4 Blood and its great community success to realize it.

Independance Day

Obviously, Ubisoft is no stranger to this custom and the firm has chosen its Rainbow Six franchise to interfere with it. Extraction (advertised as “Quarantine”, a title changed for obvious reasons these days) doesn’t go for zombies or the infected nonetheless, but for a major alien invasion that has nothing to envy to the aforementioned threats : the “Archeans” are formidable, cover the surface with a sticky infectious material and they do not hesitate to lay sticky nests in order to reproduce. In other words, we are on familiar ground.

Well-known terrain, yes, but which nevertheless has its share of originalities. It goes without saying that the Rainbow Six saga is not just any in the world of FPS, relying mainly on tactics, precision and intelligence to offer smart games, particularly suited to team play. The will ofExtraction is very clearly to offer all these facets, while sailing towards the tendency of the infected, their “dirty” and very clearly nagging side. A very interesting cocktail that rather seduced us during our test lasting several hours.

Meeting of the Third Siege

The overarching goal of Rainbow Six Extraction is quite simple: it is about playing an overtrained operator, to travel to some of the most contaminated areas in North America and perform various objectives there to fight the invasion before escaping unharmed. During our session, we were able to venture, in teams of three (the maximum possible), in the environments of New York, San Francisco and Alaska. There will be twelve in total, each divided into three subzones. and offering several different departure points.

For each sub-zone, an objective will be randomly assigned from a list of thirteen: triangulation, marking of nests, decontamination, sequential scanning… All generally ask to cooperate in order to get by as best as possible, whether the goals are offensive or defensive. You should know that if the ideal is to cross the three sub-zones having accomplished all the objectives and to come out alive, none of this is mandatory: at any time, players can decide to extract themselves if they feel the situation is eluding them, whether they are only at the very first segment of the map or have failed to hit all of their targets. Obviously, the further we go in the mission, the more points and resources we will recover, at the risk of losing almost everything if you die on the way. A good way to energize the games and make them unique, even when replaying on the same map.

Because in addition to the thirteen types of mission given randomly, Rainbow Six Extraction likes to place each of their objective in a different place during each new game ; likewise, enemies and their locations are procedurally generated, so as to renew each game session as much as possible. From what we were able to try over the few hours made available, it seemed to work rather well and we can, in addition, count on ten different types of aliens, rather classic, but frankly effective.

Extraction, literally

Note that the great peculiarity of Extraction is that a game over does not only prevent you from recovering a maximum of resources, but also deprives you of the character with whom you have lost: he then finds himself prisoner of the Archeans. in a huge cocoon and it will be necessary to return to the same map to tear it from the alien claws, before evacuating it unharmed. This rescue requires real cooperation in particular: a good initiative which definitely adds spice to the action, especially since each operator among the eighteen in total (some of whom come directly from Siege) have their own capacities, with which you may well have affinities.

Brainbow Six

If there is one area that Ubisoft masters concerning its Rainbow Six saga, it is its gameplay: on this side, be reassured since developers draw directly from the mind Siege to propose, here, a tactical way of approaching particularly demanding battles. The life bar runs out very quickly if you are not careful and, above all, if you do not cooperate with your team: there is therefore a real helping hand to take, especially if you are stranger of the series or that one emerges from a Back 4 Blood particularly rough form stripping.

For the rest, the action seemed frankly nervous and rather intelligent: we find this fluidity and precision specific to Rainbow Six with some similarities, like the ability to tilt your weapon to one side or the other to gain stealth (and aggressiveness) or to shoot through certain surfaces to take enemies by surprise. While head-on battles are sometimes (often?) Inevitable, it is nevertheless possible to opt for the most total discretion, which we found to work very well as well. Having a choice, and having a game flexible enough to be enjoyable through these two options is obviously a good point.

To best suit his style of play, Rainbow Six Extraction relies on a finely developed arsenal that we can put to good use. This of course goes through the specialties of each operator: for example, Ela has paralyzing proximity mines, Vigil can go undetectable momentarily, Tachanka deploys a destructive turret while Cluze can detonate a surface with special charges, delivering grenades to the other side of the wall. What’s more, each character has their own speed and armor: the idea is obviously to opt for several operators with complementary functions, in order to build a team of three players as complete as possible.

Also follows the choice of primary and secondary weapon and all their accessories to be released against payment, as well as REAC technologies : more than two dozen of them are made available (again, they will have to be unlocked beforehand), with various and varied functions. This goes through classic accessories such as different types of grenades (explosives, flashes, smoke bombs, etc.) to mine scanners, including reconnaissance drones or punctures allowing resuscitation or pieces of armor. The skills seemed particularly vast, with the possibility of digging and optimizing your game to the best for the most seasoned players.

You have to suffer to be good

Let us also note several modes of difficulty which should, undoubtedly, bring a real replayability: the more they are raised, the more the rewards will be great… but the more the task will be difficult. For having launched several games in the higher modes, We can safely say that coordination and perfect knowledge of maps, objectives and different types of enemies is essential to make it out alive. Beyond the simple aggressiveness and the excess of Archean races very difficult to defeat, certain elements of the decor then become harmful for the players: one can for example quote the emergence, this black and sticky substance which slows down the players (and accelerates enemy movements), which must be cleared by shooting and which then becomes acidic … causing the loss of life points.

Since we are there, we can also give a word on the level design, alternating the narrow and wide areas with many possibilities to move through the environment, whether through windows, balconies or of course directly through walls (a great Rainbow Six classic). However, it remains to be seen how the architecture will vary across all levels, although there is little doubt about its effectiveness: luckily, the game seems to offer a rather convincing artistic direction. In short, after a few hours of play but on a few levels only, Rainbow Six Extraction seemed to us sufficiently picky and pleasant to to be one of the good surprise FPS of this beginning of the year, avoiding to sink too much with ease into the so bloody character of the competing zombie games.

Our impressions

If Rainbow Six Extraction is obviously inspired by the great tenors of the genre, it is clear that it draws enough from the original formula of the saga to stand out very quickly: the experience promises to be intelligent, with a precise gameplay , ultra-efficient cooperation possibilities and a more than laudable replayability effort. A title that oscillates between brutality and discretion, but which, always, does not deny its origins in any way and wants to be clever and tactical enough to differentiate itself from its competitors, Back 4 Blood in the lead. It remains to be seen whether the entire game will be able to renew itself sufficiently over the games, despite their interesting randomness.
