On the sidelines of the triple A which massively occupy the media space, other sagas such as Total War continue their video game destiny with a certain panache. During an online event organized by SEGA, we were able to learn more about Total War : Warhammer 3 during a 30-minute presentation followed by a game session exceeding 3 hours. JV’s editorial team then spoke with Ian Roxburgh (Game Director) and Andy Hall (Principal Writer) as well as Jim Whitston (Lead Battle Designer) and Mark Sinclair (Lead Campaign Designer).

The Fate of the God-Bear

Total War: Warhammer III is the sequel to Total War : Warhammer II, and concludes the trilogy. This story thus ends in an epic finale, and involves no less than 8 playable factions with conflicting designs and unique gameplays. We find in the Mortal Realm, the starting point of the campaign, 4 demonic races (Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch), 2 human nations (Grand Cathay, Kislev), the Ogres and finally the Demons of Chaos.

The fantasy world of Warhammer is in peril. A prisoner of the First Daemon Prince Be’lakor, the Bear God Ursun agonizes in the Forge of Souls, disrupting the Winds of Magic. Guided by a mysterious sage armed only with the Tome of Fates and moved by obscure intentions, the peoples traversing the Mortal Realm decide to interfere in the destiny of the divine ursid. It’s time for them to take up arms and enter the Domain of Chaos…whether to save Ursun or on the contrary to deal him the fatal blow.

The passage between the realms is closed, but the agonizing cries of the God-Bear open rifts leading to the Realms of Chaos. These four visions of Hell according to Games Workshop represent a daunting challenge ending in an intense fight against a Prince Champion. With the minions of Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch defeated and their souls in your possession, you begin your final journey, and face the Shadow Lord Be’lakor in a desperate battle that will decide the fate of Ursun and so of the world. The 8 single-player campaigns alone promise hundreds of hours of gameplay.

The sword & the pen

Creative Assembly takes, unsurprisingly, a formula that has proven itself many times in the past, and refines it. Fans of the license will be on familiar ground, even if several new features should arouse their curiosity. Total War: Warhammer III, as a reminder, is a large-scale management-strategy game taking place on a huge map. The genre invites strategists to build an empire as well as alliances and to forge the destiny of a particular faction with both sword and pen.

Bloodlust

We are in the presence of a so-called “sandbox” experience and therefore by definition non-linear. Total freedom is left to the players who can thus bend the destiny of the world by their only decisions, both political and military. The disciples of Sun Tzu and his treatise “The Art of War” will be able to put their knowledge to good use. Battles involving hundreds and even thousands of on-screen units have made the franchise famous, and these are meant to be even more epic and strategic.

In a universe of Heroic-Fantasy, the outcome of a confrontation cannot be reduced to the troops engaged and the strategies put in place. Indeed, magic plays a vital role, and can quickly reverse the course of a confrontation. It is with this in mind that the British studios have imagined conflicts of unequaled intensity. The Survival Battles take the form of multi-stage narrative battles in which mortal peoples attempt to survive. The Storm of Magic Battles bet on the supernatural by unleashing the Winds of Magic which translates into the game with unlimited magic reserves and access to cataclysmic spells.

What about multiplayer?

The multiplayer of Total War: Warhammer 3 is also in the spotlight with a campaign involving up to 8 players on a common map. Better yet, the different factions are freed from turn-based, and can interact simultaneously. Even during the battles, all the belligerents participate by sharing units with the main interested parties and by controlling certain troops. It is thus possible to face the artificial intelligence at 8, break an alliance, and even go after a particular faction. To this is added smaller campaigns designed to be completed in one evening.

The power of ink

Total War: Warhammer 3 also invites you to show temperance, and to favor the diplomatic route in order to minimize losses and make alliances profitable. The management of your territories is at the heart of the experience imagined by Creative Assembly studios that incorporate the features needed to build a centuries-old empire. Beyond the traditional management of resources, construction of buildings and colonization of new territories are added the tools of the perfect diplomat.

Already well off in this area, the series offers itself new additions which always bring more nuances and opportunities to the players. Finally, it is possible to threaten the other factions, to demand the departure of troops present in your territories, but above all to recruit units from your allies, provided you have outposts with them. Various aids have also been implemented in order to guide players on the path of diplomacy. For example, the offers and actions required to obtain an agreement with another faction are now indicated.

Demons & Dragons

The 8 playable factions are distinguished in Total War: Warhammer III by their own objectives and several unique gameplay mechanics. During the event organized by Sega, the forces of Grand Cathay and the Daemons of Chaos were at our disposal. Here is a quick overview of the specificities of these peoples that everything opposes.

The Chaos Daemons worship the four gods of Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, and swear by united Chaos. Their leader, a Daemon Prince, wishes to seize the power of the Bear God Ursun in order to claim godhood status. Due to its multiple allegiances, this demonic faction draws from all the units of the four Chaos races to build a motley army. Two features in particular distinguish this faction from the others. The first named Demonic Glory guarantees, according to the offerings made to the gods of Chaos, access to new troops, spells as well as several body parts intended for the Demon Prince. Indeed, this warlord benefits from many customization options, and adapts to the different styles of play adopted.

On the other side of the chessboard stands Grand Cathay. Inspired by Chinese mythology, this empire protects the Great Bastion, a wall separating it from the chaotic lands, and seeks to find Shen-Zoo, the Empress’s sister, by saving Ursun in order to restore balance to the world. To do this, this faction can count on the compas Wu Xing which allows you to direct the Winds of Magic according to your own agenda. Moreover, harmony is an essential notion for these northern provinces. the philosophical principle of Yin and Yang is reflected in the game by a gauge that must be maintained to obtain various bonuses (or penalties if applicable). This harmony also impacts your troops on the battlefield. Finally, as a trading nation, the Ivory Road is another way for Grand Cathay to thrive through a caravan system that needs to be developed.

Our impressions

Creative Assembly seeks above all to satisfy fans of all persuasions, and could well be on the way to achieving this. Total War: Warhammer III ventures into playful lands unexplored by its predecessors, and perfectly assimilates new gameplay mechanics. He does not forget to respect the genre in which he fits, namely the Wargame, and the universe of Games Workshop. This management-strategy game could well make a lasting impression, and be the ultimate conclusion to a trilogy that began in 2016.
