Game news Pokémon Legends Arceus: Our video test of an unprecedented revival for the series

It’s almost an event in itself: after years of waiting, the Pokémon series is finally getting a revival with Pokémon Legends Arceus. This is an open-world title where the player must complete the very first Pokédex in history, at a time when pocket monsters are still poorly known to humans. For this, it will be necessary to capture these animals, for the first time in real time.

When you are told that Pokemon Legends Arceus marks a real revival for the Game Freak series, it’s not for nothing. Whether in terms of universe, gameplay or formula, the title is quite different from its predecessors. And we start first with the hunt for pocket monsters: in Arceus Legends, you no longer need to go through a fight to make a capture. It is possible to throw a PokéBall directly at a creature’s nose to give it a try (hitting it in the back or with a more powerful PokéBall will increase your chances of success). But of course, not all pocket monsters will be so tender: if some will stare at you without asking questions before joining your ranks, others will not hesitate to attack. After which, either you engage in combat or you flee. In the latter case, it will be necessary to pay attention to the powers of the Pokémon launched directly in the open world. If your character is hit several times, it will return to the Bivouac, a sort of camp where the hero can rest and craft items.

Who is Pokémon Legends Arceus for?

In essence, Pokémon Legends Arceus is more of an open, contemplative hunting game than a straight-up RPG. We feel that the title is sometimes torn between two worlds, with on one side its new formula, and on the other, its more classic heritage. This means that certain game systems take a back seat: Arceus Legends generally shows a certain lack of challenge, which does not do justice to the new possibilities for personalizing your team as well as to the Fast and Powerful Styles, a new system in the fights that allows you to influence the order of turns. As a reminder, in the title, there is no League or online fight, in the network.

Despite this in-between, what Pokémon Legends Arceus does, it does quite well or even very well. Game Freak’s game does indeed offer a very nifty sense of adventure, in the heart of open areas which, even if they lack points of interest, are bathed in mystery. It is thus always a pleasure to walk there (despite the fears, Legends Arceus runs well and is rather pleasing to the eye) especially on the back of mounts, which allow you to fly and swim. It is also a pleasure to constantly encounter new species of Pokémon. From start to finish, capturing pocket monsters remains exhilarating, as do the quests on offer: the title depicts a remote era of famous creatures, between fascination, veneration, and fears. In the end, a great success.
