News business Nintendo Switch: sales exceed a symbolic milestone, the Wii now beaten!

It’s a historic moment that Nintendo is experiencing: its Switch is achieving monumental scores, just a few years after its global launch. Sales have just been updated, and it’s no joke.

How many units did the Nintendo Switch sell for?

After Sony for its PS5 yesterday, it’s Nintendo’s turn to make its financial statement: the Kyoto firm has just announced that 103.54 million Switch have been sold worldwide, figures as of December 31, 2021. A simply exceptional score for a machine launched in 2017 only, allowing him to beat the figures of the Wii which, during all its activity, will have found all the same 100.9 million takers.

The Switch therefore seems unstoppable and moreover, the statistics of last year do not lie: 10.67 million consoles were thus sold between October 1 and December 31. It’s simply gargantuan and besides, we also have a little more precise data to put in their mouths for the period from April 1, 2021 to the last day of the year: 18.95 million machines were delivered, including 3.99 million OLED models (which is therefore a real success), 0,91 million de Switch Lite (that’s 17.87 million Switch Lites in total in the wild) and the rest of “classic” versions (11.79 million, therefore).

First place in sight?

With such a rise, one can then wonder if the Switch can claim the first place of the podium within the very precious list of the best-selling consoles in the history of video games. First of all, you should know that it is now Nintendo’s best-selling home machine, a gold medal that was awarded until then to the Wii, therefore. Just ahead of it, the PlayStation 4 with 118.69 million sales (which could well be eaten at this rate) and, far ahead again, the PS2 with 155 million units.

To stay within an economic framework, we also learn that the Switch claims the crazy ratio of 7.4 games for a console : more than selling the little beast in crates, Nintendo manages to retain its community terribly and to develop it quickly. It now comes down to the more than honorable sum of 766.47 million Switch games sold, including 85.41 million between October 1 and December 31, 2021. Thank you end of year celebrations.

However, that didn’t stop Nintendo from revising its forecast slightly downward. since it now plans to sell 23 million Switches for this fiscal year (which will end on March 31, 2022), against 24 million hoped for last November (and even 25.5 million initially). We would not be surprised if the company managed to realize its hopes.

As a reminder, the hybrid platform can now rely on a massive new hit to start the year off right, namely Pokemon Legends: Arceus which causes a lot of ink to flow ; soon, it will also support the J-RPG Triangle Strategy March 4th and adventure game Kirby and the Forgotten World the 25th of the same month. Later in 2022, the tsunami will resume with the arrival of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3 or the third installment of the Splatoon saga.
