On January 11 and 18, two asteroids will approach our planet at distances of 5.6 and 1.9 million kilometers respectively, warns NASA.

Two asteroids, 2013 YD48 and 7482 YD48, considered potentially dangerous, are heading towards Earth, according to calculations by the US Space Agency.

The first is comparable in size to Big Ben, while the second is twice the Empire State Building. If the 2013 YD48 will cross our planet at a distance of 5.6 million kilometers on January 11, the 7482 YD48 will brush against it seven days earlier at less than 2 million kilometers.

Previously, Thomas Zurbuchen, director in charge of scientific missions at NASA, had argued that none of the near-Earth asteroids spotted for the moment by the researchers “do not represent[ait] a threat in the next hundred years “.

Tracing NEOs

Astronomers are however far from reassured in the face of potential collisions with celestial objects since around 3,000 new near-Earth asteroids are detected each year.

At the end of November 2021, NASA thus sent the DART probe strike one of them at a speed of 24,000 km / h in an attempt to deviate from its trajectory, as part of an unprecedented mission intended to test a planetary defense system.

Other methods are also being studied to ward off such a threat, for example by triggering a nuclear explosion near the approaching celestial object. However, the technique tested within the framework of the DART mission, known as kinetic impact, is considered to be the safest.

In early December, NASA specialists announced that they had perfected the Sentry tool (Sentinel) which now makes it possible to track all near-Earth asteroids at the same time, the total number of which is now estimated at nearly 28,000.
