my opinion after a year

As with each new console generation, it all starts with a long questioning stage. Which console will I choose? Then begins a long phase of study during which I read the various tests, the comparisons, the opinions of players.

I have to admit, after falling for the first Xbox, I then returned to the Playstation universe, with the PS3 then the PS4. So when Microsoft and Sony announced the Xbox Series and PS5, the choice was not easy. But after careful consideration, I decided to leave Japanese to fly to the United States. What conclusions can be drawn after one year of experience? Here is my opinion.

Warning ! Far be it from me to revive the console war. This is to testify to my personal experience. Also, this paper is totally subjective.

Why did I buy the Xbox Series X?

Usually, I don’t buy next-gen consoles during the first weeks of marketing. But the context of scarcity and (especially) the hype that animated me for this generation have shaken up my habits. So I shortened my reflection phase before turn to the Xbox Series X.

Why this model? First, to change. After 10 years in the Playstation universe, I wanted a change. I got tired of the interface of the Japanese console, the sensations of gameplay with the DualShock 4, and Sony’s policy which, let’s face it, pushes you to get your hands on the wallet.

At the same time, I saw Xbox users praising the merits of the controller as more ergonomic. Above all, fans of the American console kept talking about the Xbox Game Pass, a sort of Netflix of video games. So I turned to the Xbox Series X, more powerful than the Series S but also equipped with a very useful 4K UHD blu-ray player for the blu-ray consumer that I am.

Navigating in a new interface also weighed on the balance, as did the design of the console, which I found much more to my liking. And that’s not to mention the size of the machine, which is more compact than the PS5.

Finally, I must say, the announcements of exclusive PS5 games were not very numerous. So I told myself that I could try the Xbox adventure and wait for the catalog of PS5 exclusives to expand to turn to a Digital Edition model. Health crisis obliges, after several weeks of patience and some missed sales, I ended up buying an Xbox Series X.

What kind of player am I?

Before getting to the heart of the matter, it seems important to me to specify that I am not one of the hardcore gamers. My choice of game is mainly centered on big licenses (Fifa, Call of Duty, Last of Us, Halo etc.) and some nuggets that I hear about in the rankings of specialized media. Basically, I’m what you call a casual gamer, a very mainstream player.

So I don’t play every day but a few hours a week when I have some free time. Apart from FPS and sports games, I’m mostly interested in the stories and worlds of the games I play. These aspects are essential for me. Of course, gameplay plays an important role in my gaming experience.

It is also probably for these reasons that I spent so many years on Playstation, Sony’s catalog having integrated many games that meet my criteria.

By buying the Xbox Series X, I therefore told myself that I was losing the games accumulated on Playstation for years. But the existence of the Game Pass allowed me to discover other games and try them without taking the risk of breaking the bank each time. It was therefore inconceivable for me to offer me the Series X without associating it with a Game Pass subscription.

The releases of next-gen games not arriving for a while, so I decided to enter the wonderful universe of Game Pass. I didn’t have the budget to buy back the (non-exclusive) games I had on the PS4. Also, I felt that paying a little more than 130 euros to access a catalog of hundreds of games was an interesting investment (especially when you know that a single PS5 game costs 70/80 euros).

Containment requires, so I was able to have fun by installing games that I already knew but also by tasting the pleasure of trying other games without financial pressure. For a little over a year, I have been able to dig as I please from a well-stocked catalog and discover some nuggets that I would never have been interested in before.

And at the pace that Microsoft is advancing, the Game Pass has more and more interest. In my opinion, it even represents the future of video games, especially since with my Ultimate offer I could also play my games on the go thanks to xCloud, le service de cloud gaming de Microsoft, from my Mac or my iPad. A delight.

In addition to the big licenses I was used to, I was able to discover excellent games like Back4Blood or Twelve Minutes. I also discovered It take two, voted best game of the year, and available on Game Pass in late 2021. I think I wouldn’t have enjoyed Xbox Series X as much without Game Pass. This subscription even led me to play more often, with more pleasure, like when I was a teenager.

Before going to the act of purchase, I must admit that I had some doubts about the experience that awaited me. I left a universe I knew, I decided to shelve dozens of games and I no longer had the opportunity to play online with my friends, all still PS4 owners.

Finally, I absolutely do not regret my choice. The interface of the Xbox pleases me much more than that of the Playstation, the controller is much more comfortable and ergonomic and the Xbox Game Pass with xCloud is undoubtedly the biggest asset of Xbox.

And things are unlikely to change. Microsoft announced the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. A historic operation that will change the video game landscape. By choosing the Xbox Series X, I therefore made the best choice for this generation of consoles. And the fact that my friends also ended up doing the same thing confirms my choice.

That doesn’t mean I’m not interested in the PS5, though. When my finances allow me, I will probably let myself be tempted by la PS5 Digital Edition, only to play console-exclusive games. So I still have a lot of time ahead of me, especially since shortages are on track to continue until 2023.
