The discovery of Ghostwire Tokyo was done in “hands off”, that is to say that we did not play the game directly, but simply saw a gameplay sequence of about 30 minutes. We will therefore focus on the intentions of the studios and not on the technique.

Story

Ghostwire Tokyo tells the strange story of Akito who on an equally strange night merges with the spirit of KK, an experienced ghost hunter. This young Japanese helplessly witnesses the disappearance of almost all the inhabitants of Tokyo. Indeed, the Japanese capital is the victim of a master of the occult named Hannya. The latter invokes supernatural forces that cause numerous incidents throughout the megalopolis. Akito and his spiritual alter-ego then take the heavy decision to thwart the plans of this mysterious antagonist together. They set off in search of truth for one and revenge for the other in a deserted Tokyo plagued by increasingly disturbing paranormal phenomena.

Ghostwire Tokyo exudes an aura rarely felt in a video game. The studios merge here the urban planning specific to a sprawling city like that of Tokyo and the paranormal for a particularly refreshing result. If you’ve never had the chance to explore the Tokyo city, this first visit is likely to be memorable in more ways than one. It must be said that the artists draw on Japanese folklore and legends which ensures the game surprising visuals, not to say singular, at the origin of a total change of scenery. The different districts of Tokyo come to life on the screen, each in their own way and with their specificities, but are altered by effects, anomalies… in short, a paranormal corruption that plagues the city and transforms it little by little. We therefore find certain visual effects that Tango Gameworks loves, in particular glitches and other artefacts which give a very particular cachet to the whole. With its both urban and supernatural approach, Ghostwire Tokyo shines a light on a dark night and makes its originality a strength.

Gameplay

Let’s put an end to a received idea right away. Ghostwire Tokyo is not a horror game, let alone a survival horror. The project from Tango Gameworks studios borrows mechanics from this type of game, but the comparison stops there. In reality, Ghostwire Tokyo is a first-person action game focused on exploration and combat.

The city of Tokyo is an ideal playground, and Tango Gameworks invites us to discover it freely. According to the developers, Ghostwire Tokyo is a non-linear adventure that drives players to curiosity. From what we know, Akito and KK roam this urban maze, exploring it and liberating the Tokyo capital from the yoke of the master of the occult Hannya one district after another. Verticality also comes into play. The young Japanese can easily access the roofs of the city thanks to his gifts, and gain height to better fulfill his objectives.

Action game requires, the fights are at the heart of the experience. The studios make it a point of honor to make these confrontations as intense as possible and to renew them constantly. This mainly involves a varied bestiary, thank the myths and legends of Japan for this, and a rise in hero power that goes hand in hand with the increasing difficulty of the game. To survive in this paranormal Tokyo, Akito and KK have elementary powers and occult weapons capable of weakening their enemies before exorcising them by tearing out their hearts… just that.

Exorcism is a central notion here. The release of spirits translates into gaining experience, and ultimately obtaining new skills to unlock in a skill tree. In general, your in-game actions are rewarded. Little advice, do not forget to pray in the temples and to exchange with the Yôkai, creatures taking the appearance of cats. This Light RPG approach should in theory enrich the gameplay throughout the adventure without taking the risk of distorting the initial concept. Despite all these good intentions, Ghostwire Tokyo must above all prove itself over time. His ability to surprise players is essential. The presence of “more narrative” sequences centered on the supernatural is an intriguing and encouraging first stone brought to the Tokyo edifice.

Scenario

It is strongly discouraged to judge a book by its cover, and the same goes for a video game after a single sequence of play. But we can recognize the screenwriters a certain desire to get out of their comfort zone. Why ? Because Tango Gameworks leaves the paths of horror, a genre that it particularly masters, to turn exclusively to the supernatural. The authors draw, just like the artists, from the folklore and myths specific to the Japanese archipelago, which already makes it in itself an exotic tale. Whether through the themes addressed, the spirits and other specters encountered, etc. Ghostwire Tokyo could well be a discovery of every moment. Conversely, the very classic staging is hardly surprising. The cutscenes expose the story, and punctuate the progression without really taking us into a narrative whirlwind. The same goes for the transitions that are finally quite agreed.

We are in the presence of a single-player game, and this seems to be in line with previous Tango Gameworks productions. No need to look for any multiplayer mode. As for the lifespan, no information has yet been communicated. It wouldn’t be surprising if Ghostwire Tokyo followed its predecessors. It would take a dozen or even fifteen hours to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but this is only a simple hypothesis.

The adventure revolves around a series of main and secondary missions to be completed according to the demands of the narrative and your own agenda. As previously stated, Ghostwire Tokyo is not linear, and leaves room for personal initiatives, but within a framework defined by the narrative. For the rest, be it elemental powers, weapons, enemies, map size, etc. the game of Tango Gameworks still remains very mysterious.

Ghostwire Tokyo remains enigmatic on many points, but this first encounter arouses our curiosity to the point of impatiently awaiting the game’s release on March 25, 2022.
