Game news Elden Ring: scary tough fights? From Software explains how it wanted to reduce the stress of the game as much as possible

For many years, the difficulty of From Software’s games (Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne…) has been debated. A difficulty that will undoubtedly be present in Elden Ring, the next production from the Japanese studio… and to which producer Yasuhiro Kitao returned, via the angle of stress.

Summary

  • Fights still difficult but less stressful
  • “An open world that can create confusion”

Fights still difficult but less stressful

With Elden Ring, From Software is doing something new: witness the large open world that awaits players from February 25, the day of the title’s release. And despite some novelties, Elden Ring seems to remain faithful to the spirit of the studio: a universe of dark-fantasy to the whispered story, where the player is more than alone in a hostile world and where the fights quickly become demanding or even too difficult. Several sources of stress that the From Software teams wanted to reduce as much as possible. Yasuhiro Kitao, one of the game’s producers, talks about it during a question and answer session organized around Elden Ring during the Taipei Game Show.

Finally, Kitao talks a lot about the stress felt by the players during this broadcast. A stress that can be felt by players, especially when they die. In Dark Souls, souls are used as currency (especially to level up). They are collected by the player when he defeats enemies but loses them at the very place where he dies and must therefore return to seek them if he does not want to lose them. A similar system in Elden Ring, except souls are called runes. However, Elden Ring has a much larger world than its predecessors. Going back to get your runes can therefore be a source of stress. To reduce it as much as possible, Yasuhiro Kitao explains that some areas have been identified as difficult by the developers: many enemies, fearsome creatures… Players risk dying there often and should try several times before succeeding. . In these areas, it will therefore be possible to resurrect next to his corpse. A feature to save yourself the miles of hassle before recovering your runes.

“An open world that can create confusion”

Beyond this feature closely related to the difficulty of the fights, Yasuhiro Kitao mentioned in particular two things which according to him should make it possible to reduce the stress of the players. And they are both related to the open world! At first, he explains that the difficulty of developing Elden Ring was mainly due to the creation of open areas: it was necessary to find a balance between the emptiness of the world and between the density of monsters in these spaces. An empty map could cause boredom, while too many monsters could cause stress. Secondly, Kitao indicates that the open world can create freedom but also confusion… hence the addition of a very agile horse in the game.

Finally, we can conclude this article with one of the novelties of the game allowing you to receive help during the fights: these are the spirits, which in addition to doing damage, attract the attention of enemies and bosses. Nevertheless, Kitao ensures that they will not be dominant and that in the majority of cases it will be necessary to manage without. And then as usual, From Software has also integrated into Elden Ring a message system: if the player is connected to the Internet, he can read the notes left by other players. A way to feel less alone in this unwelcoming world.

As a reminder, Elden Ring is expected on February 25 on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. In this same video, we learn that the development of the game is finished and that the team is focusing on a patch for the day of release.
