News business Activision-Blizzard: The task is getting more complicated for Raven Software testers (Call of Duty)!

In early December, Activision-Blizzard formalized the non-renewal of the contract of 12 workers in the quality assurance department of Raven Software. A decision deemed unfair by some of the employees, who then launched a strike.

After the investigations highlighting the problems of corporate culture, and before the announcement of the future takeover by Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard had to face a strike by testers at Raven Software (Call of Duty : Warzone), which demanded the immediate hiring of the persons concerned, as well as an increase in wages.

A look back at Raven Software’s application for union recognition

While discussions have been initiated with management, the strikers have continued the movement until January 22 and announced their intention to create a union, which was supported by the ABK Workers Alliance, a group of Activision-Blizzard employees whose goal is to centralize demands, without being a union in its own right. The process of unionization was therefore set in motion, and 78% of workers in the quality assurance department would have voted so. Consequently, the employees filed a request for official recognition from management from Activision-Blizzard, and waited for a comeback while ending the strike action. At the time of this request, a company spokesperson said:

While we believe that a direct relationship between the Company and its team members provides the best workforce opportunities, we deeply respect the rights of all employees under the law to make their own decisions about whether or not to join a union.

The Game Workers Alliance will have to go through the federal route

Last night at our house, the news fell: Activision-Blizzard would not have responded favorably to the request within the time limit, paving the way for another procedure. The Game Workers Alliance union has not been recognized internally, with people wishing to form the union will have to go through a vote organized with the National Labor Relations Board, independent federal agency responsible for implementing union elections and investigating labor practices. This time, the 34 employees who originally formed the union will have to obtain the majority support of the employees of the department. If successful, the birth of the union will be legally imposed at Activision-Blizzard.

At Activision Blizzard, we deeply respect the right of all employees to make their own decisions about whether or not to join a union. We carefully reviewed and considered the initial request from the CWA (Communications Workers of America) last week and tried to find a mutually agreeable solution with the CWA that would have led to an expedited election process. Unfortunately, the parties could not reach an agreement, says the company.

We are proud to apply to the NLRB because we have supermajority support for our union and know that together we will get the formal legal recognition we have deserved, say the GWA and CWA. .

Yesterday, Activision announced a reorganization of quality assurance teams, meaning that the testers will be put in direct contact with the developers of Call of Duty Warzone by being integrated into the various teams. A process “carefully studied and prepared for some time” according to Activision-Blizzard, which interviews labor law experts.

According to Wilma Liebman, former chairwoman of the National Labor Relations Board, this reshuffle could be a strategy to alienate workers wishing to unionize. The CWA goes in the same direction, indicating that it was about a “manoeuvre to thwart” desires for trade union organization. Now it will take wait for the application to be submitted of recognition to the National Labor Relations Board to find out what happened next.
